This master thesis would not have been possible to complete
without the assistance and support of numerous individuals.

I would like to express my deepest gratitudeto my thesis advisor, Dr. Hsien-Chin Liou.
A hard-working and active researcher,
who is concerned about current educational issues in English teaching,
and never runs out of passion for research.
I have learned from her attitude toward being a researcher as well as a teacher.
Dr. Liou has always encouraged me when I was frustrated and down.
From her encouragement I was able to regain my confidence
to keep working hard on my thesis study.
Without her support and guidance, I could not have gone this far.

I would like to extend thanks to my committee members
Dr. Yuli Yeh and Dr. Chih-Hua Kuo’s valuable comments and insights
that made this thesis study complete.
Special thanks also go to Dr. Yeh for her patience and guidance
under the NSC CANDLE project (NSC94-2524-S007-001).

Many people provided their helping hands to this thesis study.
I would like to thank Dr. Chia-Chien Chang and Dr. Su-Chen Huang
for their generosity of offering their classes for this thesis study
and their assistance through the data collection process.
Meanwhile, I would also like to thank Dr. Howard Chen
for his assistance and instruction on the MOODLE platform.
The acknowledgement also goes to the help
from the National Tsing Hua University NLP lab—
Yu-Chia Chang and Chien-Chen Wu—for their quick responses to my requests.

I also want to thank my family for their caring
and their unfailing support for every decision I made.

Finally, I want to direct my gratitude to
National Tsing Hua University Women's Basketball Team.
For seven years, the team taught me
the spirits of teamwork, partnership, persistence, and discipline.
Together like a big family we have experienced
every precious moment on and off the basketball court.
Those memories will certainly live on and on,
and will be the memories that I cherish forever.
I love my team!

My graduate life in Tsing-Hua finally comes to an end.
This journey has ended up with more than what I originally expected.
During the period,
I have more than three more years in the Women’s Basketball Team
and one master’s degree.
I am most grateful to the one who lights up my life with love and care.

The next journey will continue in the U.S.
